FO-TO-SHOP training courses now available at the BME Centre for Modern Languages
The Centre for Interpreter and Translator Training (TFK) of the BME Centre for Modern Languages (INYK) is continuing its series of training courses for practising translators, interpreters and trainers of translators and interpreters. At our interactive courses called FO-TO-SHOP (FOrdító-Translator TOlmács-Interpreter WorkShop), we not only work on developing participants’ skills; the workshops are also excellent opportunities to build professional relationships.
The next topic for Spring 2023:
From tremendous translator headaches to fiddly formatted source files
Imagine the last PDF file you were working with. Yes, in colour. Did you receive it, send it, create it? What was its genre? Contract, invoice, diploma, final report, CV, book? How was it created? Was it automatically exported from some system or Word; was it scanned or photographed? How readable was the text? These are all issues you need to face: sounds familiar?
Now let’s imagine you have received such a file as a translation assignment. What’s more, you will have to translate it with a CAT tool, and the client will also insist that the target language file should be as similar as possible to the source and that it is editable as he wants to modify it here and there. How will you go about it?
- a) I have no idea.
- b) I’ll ask in the one of the Facebook groups for translators.
- c) I’ve got that cool software that converts ALL PDFs beautifully.
- d) There are websites for this, right?
- e) I know a guy who is very good at DTP and can do it for me.
- f) My favourite CAT tool automatically processes PDFs.
Whichever of these answers you choose, each of them may harbour dangers and pitfalls which I will reveal to you at the workshop. I’ll also give you quite specific practical advice if you happen to struggle with such a task yourself.
The workshop will be run by: Róbert Kovács, translation technology and DTP expert
